Say "YES!" to Winter Photo Sessions - 5 Reasons Why
I hear it all the time - “ Well it’s November, so we will have to wait until spring for photos now.” Keep in mind winter in Wisconsin can last well into May.
Errrrrrrrrrk! Let’s turn the table on this. I used to kind of nod my head yes to this, but NO MORE! You CAN take stunning photos in the winter both indoors and outside! Many people see winter dates and think, dead pants, naked trees, mud, colddddd, grey. This doesn’t have to be the case. Here are 5 reasons why winter can be an ideal time for photos! (And some stunning photos allll taken between Late October-March for your viewing pleasure.)
Less people everywhere
Yes, winter does mean cold, and maybe dead plants, but there are also less people out and about. It is a great time to go to monuments, buildings, parks, the beach - places you love that otherwise have a ton of foot traffic. I love heading to the beach in the winter, there are so few people there (COVID ideal) and we can get all these amazing wide shots without stragglers in them.
2. Unobstructed views
Yes trees are missing leaves and there aren’t colorful flowers, but that gives you access to spaces in a different ways. If you are heading to a spot that has an amazing view, less can sometimes be more. Take Lake Michigan, sometimes at lakefront parks you can hardly see the water with leaves on the tress, come winter there is that blue Caribbean water.
3. Snow, snow, snow.
It’s winter friends, let. it. snow. Winter schedules are generally more flexible (at least for me), that means we can play it by ear and wait for that storm to roll in. Let’s get out there in that fresh magical snow and play. There is nothing like standing in the middle of a quiet snowstorm with your fav people, that quiet calm - aaahhh.
4. Snuggle more
Yep, make like a penguin and get close to your fam or partner. Not that we need more reasons to snuggle our favorite people but being cold is always a good one! Cold makes you naturally want someone to hold you and warm you up, you won’t get any hesitation from me! Also snuggle more could mean inside. Get creative with your home. We are all inside so break out those home magazines and get inspired to create a beautiful backdrop - think cozy socks, hot chocolate…
5. The colors
Winter colors are actually quite beautiful. The plants that were once green and lush are a warm dried yellow, and the red berries and branches that come out are a vibrant pop in color! Embrace those warm deep tones and let them contrast against the winter vastness. Yes the sky may be grey most of the time, but that lends to even lighting and skin tone - we are all into that!
